The World Food Programme (WFP) is spearheading a project in Colombia aimed at strengthening community resilience through Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in the departments of Amazonas, Putumayo, and Caquetá.
The initiative focuses on empowering local communities to adapt to climate variability and extreme weather events while promoting sustainable agricultural practices that are aligned with local culture and biodiversity conservation.
Targeted communities will benefit from a participatory approach that integrates traditional knowledge, particularly in forest and water management. Women producers, community leaders, and natural resource managers play a central role in the project, ensuring that knowledge transmission, traditional agricultural practices, and biodiversity care are preserved. A gender-sensitive strategy underpins the project, promoting equality, safe participation in decision-making, and the recovery of traditional knowledge, with the goal of strengthening livelihoods and protecting women and girls from violence.
The project also emphasizes collaboration with the private sector to enhance market access and promote responsible business practices that benefit both communities and their territories. Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes have been conducted with community authorities to ensure autonomy and agreement on project activities, while baseline data has been collected and uploaded to WFP platforms.
A three-pronged methodology guides the project’s implementation, including the Seasonal Livelihood Survey (SLLS) to assess climate vulnerabilities, the development of Participatory Community Plans (PCPs) to identify land use, micro-watersheds, and environmental degradation, and a learning-by-doing approach for implementing NbS. Of the 45 targeted communities across Amazonas, Caquetá, and Putumayo, 38 will participate in the NbS interventions, with specific activities tailored to the local context and value chains such as cocoa and Amazonian fruits.
The overarching goal of the project is to foster sustainable livelihoods, strengthen governance of territories, and enhance climate adaptation capacity through inclusive, participatory, and gender-sensitive implementation of Nature-based Solutions. By combining traditional knowledge with modern approaches, the initiative aims to generate lasting benefits for both communities and the Amazon rainforest.
