Deadline: 1-Jan-23
Leverist.de is pleased to announce the applications for Restoration of the Ethiopian Forest Landscape, a sector of great economic potential.
Your benefits
- Find local partners
- Take advantage of local contacts and networks provided by GIZ to sustainably implement your business solution.
They want to achieve these sustainable development goals:
- Clean Water and Sanitation
- Life on Land.
The Business Opportunity
- Ethiopia is heavily affected by deforestation. To cover the future demand of energy and construction material, the country needs to increase its forest cover and forest productivity. This goes along with a series of benefits: Forests protect vulnerable soils from erosion, regulate the water balance, provide forest products like timber and in addition create sustainable job opportunities. It is estimated that each hectare newly planted forest can sustainably maintain two jobs along the entire forest value chain. Investments in the forestry sector offer attractive financial returns and help to avoid expensive wood imports. While the forestry sector thus harbours much potential, it still needs improvements in terms of efficiency and initial investments to create viable businesses in the forestry sector.
- Ethiopia offers great ecological and cultural diversity, which is of global importance given that the country is part of two biodiversity hotspots – the Eastern Afromontane and the Horn of Africa. The protection and sustainable use of biodiversity represents great economic and developmental potential. In this context, forests play a vital role. The Ethiopian government aims at restoring 22 million hectares of degraded lands and forests by 2030. In order to reach this goal, landscape restoration needs to create economic benefits for the local communities. In this regard, a significant step in the right direction was made with the new forest law from 2018 which recognizes the important role of communities in managing forests and provides incentives for private forest developers.
How your contribution to development cooperation works
- A sustainable forestry sector creates jobs and provides opportunities for import substitution. At the same time, many of the pressing environmental problems such as land degradation and climate change can be mitigated by investing in the forestry sector.
Who are they looking for?
- They are looking for companies and organizations active in the field of landscape restoration.
