Deadline: 19-Sep-2025
The Porirua City Council is offering a compelling opportunity for community groups, businesses, schools, iwi and other organisations to bring forward creative solutions that champion waste reduction.
By offering generous grant funding, the council aims to inspire local initiatives that prioritize reducing, reusing, repairing or repurposing, rather than simply recycling or disposing of waste.
The contestable waste minimisation fund at Porirua City Council provides financial assistance for local waste minimisation or waste reduction projects that contribute to the goals outlined in the Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2023–2029. The purpose of this fund is to support the development of innovative solutions for reducing waste in Porirua city, encourage initiatives that minimise waste at its source, and help maximise resource recovery while moving the community towards a circular economy.
Projects that align with the higher levels of the waste hierarchy—reduce, rethink, redesign, reuse, repair and repurpose—are strongly encouraged. The fund also seeks to back initiatives that complement and enhance existing programmes, address current gaps, create new opportunities and inspire greater community participation in waste minimisation efforts.
The grants provide up to $30,000 in funding on an annual basis to support larger-scale projects. They are offering a chance for well-developed ideas to secure meaningful support. These grants are made possible by the Waste Levy, ensuring that important local initiatives can grow without financial strain.
Eligibility for the fund is limited to businesses, community organisations, social enterprises, schools, iwi and non-governmental organisations, provided they are legal entities. Individuals, public sector organisations and Porirua City Council itself are not eligible to apply.
By aligning with the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2023–2029, these grants aim to help Porirua become a resource-conscious, low-waste city—one project at a time.
