Deadline: 12-Sep-2025
UNICEF has launched a Call for Expression of Interest to provide technical support for sand dam construction in the arid and semi-arid counties of Garissa and Marsabit, which are among the most vulnerable regions in Kenya to the impacts of climate change.
The focus areas include water, WASH and environment, improved resilience and water access for people in ASAL counties through nature-based solutions and sustainable management systems, technical feasibility assessment to site and design sand dams, supervision for low-cost climate-resilient interventions, contribution to UNSCDF (2022–2027) Kenya Strategic priority 2 (SP2) Prosperity and Planet Outcome 2.1, and UNICEF (2022–2027) Workplan Outcome 1: Survive and Thrive, particularly Output 1.9 on inclusive, climate change-adaptive, and gender-responsive drinking water provision.
The project aims to address the severe impacts of drought, water scarcity, and floods that limit development and trap communities in poverty. By providing reliable water sources through sand dams, the initiative seeks to ensure year-round access to drinking water for people, livestock, and small-scale gardening while also recharging groundwater aquifers. This intervention will further help reduce the vulnerabilities of women and girls who are primarily responsible for water collection.
The expected results include improved resilience and access to water for 15,000 people in the target counties, supported through technical feasibility assessments, site-specific designs, and supervision of sand dam construction. Key activities involve screening 20 potential sites, conducting detailed studies on 10 selected sites, preparing design and costed bills of quantities, and providing supervision for the construction of six sand dams across Garissa and Marsabit counties.
Eligible Civil Society Organisations and Trusts are invited to submit proposals showcasing their capacity, technical expertise, and cost-effectiveness in alignment with the objectives. Proposals must be submitted through the UN Partner Portal by 12 September 2025.
