UNOPS has announced a Call for Proposals for “Sharing knowledge and capacity building for peatland restoration in Tanjung Leban and Temiyang village, Bengkalis District, Riau Province.”
Peat restoration is an effort that requires a long time and process to restore the ecological function of peatlands. Today the concept of water sharing remains a problem. The restoration effort can be done through maintaining water content in the peatlands which will contribute to improving the welfare of people affected by degraded peatlands. Therefore, the Peat Restoration Agency (BRG) seeks to implement restoration through the 3R approach: rewetting peat, revegetation or replanting, and revitalization of livelihood sources. In addition, the willingness of community leaders to participate and collaborate is important in order to get full support from the community.
Through continuous research and development in the management of peat hydrological area (Kawasan Hidrologis Gambut – KHG), BRG partners with several local and international universities and government research institutions to conduct research related to peatlands and the BRG approach through 3R and how to address the ecological function of the peatlands through learning and sharing of information and fostering community participation and set up of infrastructure facilities to strengthen the spirit of the restoration movement on the site for the aspect of restoration technology transfer through the cultural approach of the community. To achieve this effort, BRG requires facilities for community meetings as well as establishing tree seedlings or nurseries as an effort to revitalize the community as well as sharing information with communities about the importance of revegetation in peatlands.
