Deadline: 29-Aug-2025
The Wildlife Habitat Canada’s Large Grants Program for the Natural Heritage Conservation Program – Land Trusts Conservation Fund (NHCP‑LTCF) is now accepting applications for the 2025–2026 year.
This initiative continues Canada’s Nature Legacy commitment with further federal investment, aimed at conserving vital ecosystems across the country.
The purpose of the Large Grants Program is to support not-for-profit Canadian land trusts in acquiring and safeguarding conservation lands. With a goal of preserving key natural habitats, the program aligns directly with Canada’s target of protecting a quarter of its land and ocean by 2025, and ultimately reaching 30 percent by 2030. As such, projects that contribute to protected areas or other effective conservation measures are especially valued.
Applicants may request between USD 50,001 and USD 1,000,000 per project, with organizations able to submit up to three proposals collectively totaling up to USD 1,250,000. Funding requires matching contributions—each dollar awarded must be accompanied by at least $1.50 from non-federal sources—ensuring projects are rooted in community and institutional collaboration.
Successful grantees are also required to contribute to a stewardship endowment fund, helping secure the long-term preservation of conserved lands. The program is designed to support a wide range of land conservation mechanisms, including both fee simple acquisitions and conservation agreements, with flexibility for innovative arrangements pending prior discussion.
This period provides a vital opportunity for land trusts to secure funding and technical support to advance conservation work that matters deeply. By offering significant grants with clear conservation impact and long-term commitment, this program invites Canadian land trusts to help shape a greener legacy—protecting landscapes, biodiversity, and communities for generations to come.
