The Porirua City Council has created a meaningful opportunity for local organisations, businesses, and individuals to bring inspiring waste reduction ideas to life through its Waste Minimisation Grants.
This initiative invites the community to actively contribute to a low-waste future by turning innovative concepts into real-world impact.
At its heart, the grants scheme is designed to channel financial support to initiatives that stand at the forefront of waste minimisation. It seeks proposals that operate at the top of the waste hierarchy—those that focus on reduction, redesign, reusing, repairing, or repurposing—rather than relying merely on recycling. In doing so, the council encourages projects that not only manage waste but rethink how it is prevented in the first place.
This fund is aligned with the goals of the Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan for 2023–2029, and warmly welcomes projects that contribute to Porirua’s local action plan. It has a particular interest in supporting innovative solutions that target key waste streams, such as organic materials or construction and demolition waste, as well as projects aimed at strengthening the city’s capacity for resource recovery.
In the 2025–2026 financial year, a pool of $20,000 has been made available for Tier 2 projects. Applicants can apply for up to $2,000 each, giving individuals and smaller initiatives the opportunity to bring their ideas into action. This support allows for new projects to start small, prove their impact, and grow within the community.
Tier 2 funding is open to a wide range of applicants. Individuals, community groups, iwi, schools, businesses, and other organisations are eligible to apply, ensuring that everyone has the chance to play a part in building a circular economy and shaping Porirua’s journey toward becoming a low-waste city.
