Deadline: 31-Aug-2025
The Horowhenua Waste Minimisation Grant supports the start-up costs of projects that help reduce or reuse waste in the Horowhenua District, preventing it from going to landfill. The grant is aimed at initiatives that align with the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, which focuses on making recycling easy, reducing waste, managing it responsibly, and ensuring environmentally safe disposal, including for hazardous materials like herbicides, lithium-ion batteries, and paint.
The grant also supports community education around waste minimisation and encourages the reuse of waste. Projects that offer high-impact, low-cost solutions to divert waste will be prioritised. While emphasis is placed on initiatives focused on reducing or reusing resources—the top of the waste hierarchy—projects that promote safe disposal and treatment of waste will also be considered.
Each year, $10,000 is made available through this grant. Eligible applicants include individuals, community groups, organisations, and schools. However, groups already receiving substantial government funding or those with regular independent income sources are ineligible. Others excluded include organisations seeking significant capital funding, those with unfinished previous projects, or those with incomplete applications.
To qualify, projects must meet at least one of several criteria. These include reducing waste at its source, reusing waste materials, improving recycling processes, recapturing and redistributing food waste, composting organic or green waste, and implementing a government-accredited product stewardship programme for priority products.
