Deadline: 15-Oct-2025
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program (SGP) continues to support grassroots solutions to global environmental challenges in Mozambique.
Implemented by UNDP and executed by UNOPS, the SGP has been active in the country since 2003 and has funded over 250 projects that strengthen local communities while promoting sustainable development and environmental resilience.
As part of its 8th Operational Phase, the SGP is calling for new project proposals from civil society organizations, community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions in Mozambique. This phase aims to deepen engagement with local actors by offering them access to knowledge, technical support, and financial resources that empower them through hands-on experience, skill-building, and targeted interventions.
Eligible organizations can apply for funding of up to US$20,000 per project. Each proposed initiative should have a duration of up to 12 months and must be implemented during the period of 2026 to 2027. Projects should align with at least one of the GEF’s key environmental focal areas: biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, waste management, or international waters.
To qualify, applicants must be legally registered entities with at least two years of operational experience. They must be rooted in and focused on serving local communities, particularly in the Chimanimani-Gorongosa landscapes, Marromeu, or Matutuine. A letter of recommendation from community leaders is required, along with proof of the organization’s capacity to manage environmentally related or climate-focused projects.
This grant opportunity represents a meaningful investment in local leadership, enabling Mozambican communities to tackle both pressing environmental issues and their own development needs. Through these targeted small grants, the GEF continues to demonstrate that local action plays a critical role in solving global problems.
