Deadline: 14-Jul-25
If you have a camera, a story, and a vision for the Indian Himalayas—particularly in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura—this is your chance to be part of a powerful participatory filmmaking journey.
The initiative invites young storytellers to create a 3 to 4-minute film that captures their perspective on “Himalaya for the Future,” amplifying their voice for nature and sustainability in one of the most ecologically significant regions of India.
The ‘Himalaya for the Future’ initiative is a collaborative effort between IUCN and the TATA Group, with support from the TCS Foundation. It is focused on building a foundation for development anchored in nature-based solutions that improve social, environmental, and economic conditions in the Himalayas.
As part of this broader vision, Youth4Himalaya has been launched, aligning with the national Mission LiFE campaign and the IUCN Youth Strategy. This program recognizes the critical role of young people as changemakers who can raise awareness, drive local conservation efforts, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Himalayan ecosystems.
Participants will focus their films on themes such as forest ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, wildlife conservation, water resources, clean energy, urban resilience, and sustainable waste management.
These thematic areas are connected by key cross-cutting concerns including climate change, disaster risk reduction, traditional knowledge, gender inclusion, and nature-based solutions. Youth filmmakers are encouraged to explore their unique insights on these topics and develop creative, solution-driven narratives.
Beyond storytelling, the program offers a dynamic learning opportunity for young participants to build essential media and communication skills. Under the mentorship of an award-winning environmental filmmaker, selected students will receive training in scripting, filming, editing, and production.
All sessions and activities, from initial training to final film submission, will be conducted online, making it accessible and inclusive for all selected youth. Along the way, students will take on different production roles, collaborate in editing sessions, and receive personalized guidance to bring their ideas to life.
This initiative is especially suited for students currently enrolled in schools or colleges within the Indian Himalayan Region, and those who show a deep commitment to sustainability and innovative thinking. Participants with a flair for storytelling, creativity, or previous experience with film and media clubs are highly encouraged to apply.
The program is inclusive and strongly encourages participation from female students and those with special needs. All selected participants will receive certificates, and standout films may be showcased at global IUCN events, offering an exciting platform for recognition and impact.
By taking part in this journey, young people will not only enhance their skills in visual storytelling but also become part of a movement to highlight environmental challenges and inspire action through film. It is a unique chance to combine art and advocacy while contributing to the future of the Himalayas.
