Deadline: 13-Nov-2025
The European Union Delegations in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait City, and Doha, in collaboration with the Embassies of EU Member States in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, present the annual Chaillot Prize for the Promotion of Human Rights.
This prestigious award recognizes outstanding actions, campaigns, projects, or lifetime achievements that advance the protection and awareness of human rights across the GCC. Through this initiative, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to supporting local and regional efforts that uphold the dignity, equality, and rights of all individuals.
The Chaillot Prize celebrates individuals and organizations that have made meaningful contributions to promoting human rights, particularly those that champion the rights of vulnerable communities or foster general public awareness on key human rights issues. Eligible applicants include local civil society organizations, private or public institutions, and individuals who have demonstrated active engagement in human rights advocacy. Institutions must be legally registered in one of the GCC countries, while individual applications submitted by third parties must include the candidate’s consent.
The award is open to candidates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Kuwait, the State of Qatar, the Sultanate of Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. It recognizes both ongoing projects and lifetime achievements that have had a tangible impact on human rights in the region. Each year, the European Union Delegations promote the call for applications through their official websites, media channels, and direct outreach to civil society groups and institutions working in related fields.
Applicants may submit proposals highlighting specific actions, campaigns, or projects, as well as personal achievements that demonstrate long-term dedication to human rights advocacy. Those who have applied in previous years are also encouraged to reapply if they have not yet been awarded. The Embassies of EU Member States across the GCC actively support this process by organizing information sessions and encouraging eligible participants to apply.
All applications must be submitted to the European Union Delegation in Riyadh, though submissions may also be forwarded via EU Delegations in Abu Dhabi, Kuwait City, or Doha, or through local EU presidencies to ensure delivery. Submissions must include a cover letter and a completed application form, both in English or Arabic. The cover letter should provide a brief overview of the applicant’s work and describe the proposed action or project in no more than 300 words, outlining its goals, immediate impact, and broader outcomes. Supporting materials such as publications or media articles may also be included to strengthen the application.
Entries are evaluated based on the written materials provided, focusing on the originality, relevance, and impact of the work in advancing human rights awareness and protection. By recognizing and amplifying local efforts, the Chaillot Prize serves as a bridge between the European Union and the GCC region, promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to human dignity and justice.
