The NSW Government is seeking applicants for its NSW Aboriginal Creative Fellowship which is part of a suite of Create NSW Creative Leadership programs. The objective of this fellowship is to support an artist, knowledge holder or creative practitioner to undertake creative research, which engages with the collections and resources of the State Library of NSW and works towards a new body of work.
Create NSW’s Creative Leadership programs support NSW artists, practitioners and arts and cultural workers to undertake professional development programs or significant opportunities to support their career advancement.
The Program
- The successful Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artist, knowledge holder or creative practitioner will be supported to conduct research and engage with the State Library collections, delving into subjects and materials from the Library’s Indigenous Collections.
- The Fellowship is intended to invest in the career development of an artist who has the capacity to make an outstanding contribution to artistic and archival/historical/research practice in the NSW Aboriginal and First Nations context and is at a critical moment in their career.
- One Fellow will be awarded a cash grant of $30,000. The grant is to be used for the development of new work, research and travel (subject to updated Federal Health advice) among other activities to be defined by the applicants.
- The Fellowship is only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live and work in New South Wales, with the aim of supporting an artist at any stage of their career – emerging, mid-career and established – who has shown dedication and a high level of commitment to their practice.
- Expressions of interest from artists across all disciplines of arts practice are welcomed.
Eligibility Criteria
- Australian residents who identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
- It is recommended that the applicant nominates themselves as the primary applicant. The applicant will need to demonstrate their credentials and evidence of professional practice through the submission of support materials and CVs.
- Applicant must :
- be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individual (Please note: For the purpose of these guidelines, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander individual is a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and is accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived);
- have a strong cultural affiliation with country that is now called NSW;
- be a resident of NSW;
- be an Australian citizen; and
- over the age of 18.
