The Prime Minister’s Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao to support New Zealanders on learning experiences in Asia and Latin America.
Aims
The scholarship aims to:
- strengthen New Zealand institutions’ connections with their counterparts in key Asia and Latin America countries
- promote understanding of the strength and quality of New Zealand’s education system and raise awareness of New Zealand as a preferred education destination
- improve the international skills of the New Zealand workforce
- strengthen people to people connections between New Zealand and countries in Asia and Latin America through participants building lifelong friendships and networks
- strengthen New Zealand’s ability to engage with key trading partners
- improve New Zealanders’ understanding of key trading partners’ business practices and culture
Benefits
Individuals on an exchange, internship or other independent programme can receive:
- Tuition fees to undertake a course in Asia or Latin America (if you are undertaking an exchange where you continue to pay NZ fees, the scholarship will not cover these)
- Brokerage fees of approved internship providers (for internships only)
- Return economy flights NZ-Asia $2,500 or NZ-Latin America $3,500
- Contribution to living and accommodation costs of $250 for each week actively on programme in Asia or Latin America
- A one-semester exchange or study abroad programme is supported for 18 weeks: $4,500
- A two-semester exchange or study abroad programme is supported for 36 weeks: $9,000
- A full year academic programme is supported for 36 weeks: $9,000
- A two-year academic programme is supported for 72 weeks: $18,000
- Travel and medical insurance
- Contribution to visa fees up to a maximum of $200
- For a group programme application, additional funding of up to $20,000 at the discretion of the selection panel. This will be sourced from within the appropriated funding for the Prime Minister’s Scholarships.
Eligibility Criteria
The Prime Minister’s Scholarship is open to those who meet the following criteria:
- At least 18 years old at the date of applying
- New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
- Have been a resident in New Zealand for at least 12 of the previous 24 months
- Not an immediate relative of an Education New Zealand staff member or selection panel member
- Medically fit to travel (successful applicants will need to agree to complete any routine medical checks performed at the border, such as COVID-19 tests)
- Able to attend the full duration of your proposed programme overseas
- Eligible for an entry visa into your host country
- Have not previously received a Prime Minister’s Scholarship of the same type you are applying for (group or individual).
