Deadline: 08-Sep-2025
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has announced the launch of the Powering Healthcare Innovation (PHI) Fund. This initiative aims to address the lack of electricity in healthcare facilities by supporting innovative solutions that can expand energy access in the sector.
Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), an independent organization hosted by UNOPS, leads this effort. With a global mission to speed up energy transitions in emerging and developing nations, SEforALL works with governments and other stakeholders to end energy poverty and promote renewable energy. The Powering Healthcare (PHC) workstream within SEforALL acts as the driving force to increase investment and sustainability in healthcare facility electrification (HFE). This PHI project is managed by SEforALL and funded by UK aid through the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform.
The fund supports SEforALL’s vision of a just and equitable global energy transition, enabling everyone to live with dignity on a healthy planet. The PHI Fund focuses on scalable financial, policy, and technical innovations that can improve healthcare electrification and enhance global healthcare services. Electrifying healthcare facilities is vital for better health outcomes, wider energy access, industrial innovation, and climate action.
As a small-grants facility, the PHI Fund aims to unlock and scale innovative ideas in the HFE sector, especially in low-income countries. Funded innovations must offer new approaches beyond current practices, with the potential to be replicated in other regions or countries. Focus areas for the solutions include sustainability, data, research, financial models, and funding mechanisms.
The fund will support 3 to 6 grantees with a total available pool of USD 300,000 over a 10-month period. Individual grants may go up to USD 80,000, released in four separate tranches during the grant timeline.
The intended impact is a just, equitable, and sustainable energy transition that supports dignified living. In the long run, SEforALL aims to create scalable models that can inspire and influence energy transitions globally. The medium-term goal is to produce sustainable and replicable healthcare electrification plans and solutions. Short-term goals include equipping stakeholders with data and innovative tools to attract larger investments in the sector.
The fund targets Sub-Saharan Africa, with eligible countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
Eligible applicants include NGOs, foundations, Indigenous Peoples Organizations, civil society and grassroots organizations, federations, ethnic organizations, academic and research institutions, and for-profit entities.
