Deadline: 12 June 2020
Can you create a digital tool supporting the health care system (including but not limited to providers, government, and public health and community organizations) during a large-scale health crisis (pandemic, natural disaster, or other public health emergency)? If yes, then apply for the Emergency Response for the Health Care System Innovation Challenge.
During large-scale emergencies, the health care system including but not limited to individual providers, government, and public health and community organization, is overwhelmed by patients who need help. Emergencies include pandemics, natural disasters or severe weather (hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, or earthquakes), radiation, and chemical spills.
The health care system faces several challenges during an emergency such as:
- Resource Management: Shortages of equipment, staff, and cash flow
- Health Data Exchange: Limited information and access available on patients’ health histories
- Training and Communication: Limited training and cumbersome communication between responders and clinicians
- Capacity: Limited beds, equipment, and resources and a need to maximize patient flow/throughput
In addition, the health and safety of health care providers, first responders, and others on the front lines of emergency situations is essential. According to the World Health Organization, health care providers fighting COVID-19 are at an elevated risk of exposure to hazards like pathogens and can face long working hours, psychological distress, fatigue, occupational burnout, stigma, and physical and psychological violence.
