Deadline: 21-Feb-21
The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Indonesia, in collaboration with the Indonesian IoT Association (ASIOTI), launched EU Social DigiThon competition themed “Aksi Muda untuk Perubahan” (“Youth Actions for Change”). This competition aims to bring creative and innovative minds from across Indonesia to develop ideas for digital-based solutions to address COVID-19-related challenges.
The EU Delegation to Indonesia seeks to explore the link between digital information and technology and the particular resolution to social and human rights issues arising from the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Thus, this Social DigiThon is a strategic platform to ignite youth’s involvement to creative and innovative approaches in tackling issues of social and human rights faced by women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups, through digital based technology.
Ten finalists will be selected to pitch their solutions to a jury panel comprising representatives from the EU Delegation, ASIOTI and the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan). Three winners will receive guidance and support to implement their projects and have their ideas realised.
Areas of Focus
- Faced by Children and Youths:
Some of the current situations under this area includes:- Child marriages on rise in Indonesia as COVID-19 deepen desperation for poverty stricken families (Straits Times, October 2020).
- Children and youths’ access to education has been disrupted as a result of physical distancing measures. Furthermore, children are also prone to heightened levels of anxiety, fear, and worry (The Jakarta Post, June 2020).
- Faced by Women and Girls
Some of the current situations under this area includes:- Growing evidence shows that the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with an increase in gender-based violence (sexual and physical) against women and girls in Indonesia (UNFPA, June 2020).
- The pandemic-induced poverty surges have also widened the gender poverty gap – meaning more women will be pushed into extreme poverty than men (UN Women, September 2020).
- Faced by People with Disabilities:
Some of the current situations under this area includes:- Online teaching platforms and applications do not always cater to a diversity of abilities and often made learning from home more difficult for students (Australia Indonesia research, October 2020).
- A recent survey from the Indonesia Disability Network (JDI) showed that only around 60% of people with disabilities had adequate access to information about COVID-19 and how to avoid infection (The Jakarta Post, June 2020).
Criteria
- Design creative digital-based prototype ideas that respond to the social and human rights issues and challenges faced by vulnerable groups in Indonesia, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, in the Covid-19 pandemic.
- The prototype system should be mobile app friendly (android/iOS).
- Participants will need to explain how their concept note will respond to address any of the priority area of focus listed above, and how The EU Social DigiThon reward would allow the participants to build on this work.
