The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), offered by the Embassy of Japan, supports organizations in implementing projects that improve the well-being of local populations by meeting their basic human needs. This grant scheme has contributed globally to strengthening human security at the grassroots level. Supported projects include construction, renovation, or provision of equipment for schools, health facilities, vocational training centres, small bridges, boreholes, and more.
The maximum grant amount is 10,000,000 yen (about 40,000,000 FCFA) per project. Projects must align with GGP’s core principle of improving local well-being, involve construction, rehabilitation, or equipment provision, and be completed within 12 months. Eligible sectors include education, health, agriculture-related infrastructure, water supply, environment, women’s empowerment, support for vulnerable groups, socio-economic development, and transport.
GGP does not fund projects for religious or political purposes, cultural or sports activities, commercial ventures, academic or professional research, military-related activities, vocational training only, or farming projects. Funding is limited to tangible and traceable costs such as construction, rehabilitation, and durable equipment.
The grant is intended for non-commercial projects submitted by non-profit organizations such as domestic or international NGOs, associations, cooperatives, health organizations, educational institutions, local governments, and vocational training centres for disadvantaged groups. Applicants must be officially registered in Cameroon, have been active in their field for at least five years, have a physical head office in the country, maintain a bank account in their name, and provide activity and financial reports for the past three years. They must also demonstrate sound management, accounting, and inventory systems, along with sufficient funds to maintain the facilities or items provided.
Individuals, private companies, central government bodies, state-owned enterprises, and United Nations organizations are not eligible to apply.
