The Wolfson Foundation offers funding support to charities focused on mental health. Their grants are specifically aimed at capital projects that enhance training, employment opportunities, and supported housing for individuals with mental health needs.
The main goals of the funding are to increase access to services, improve the quality and range of those services, and support the long-term sustainability of the organisations involved. Grants typically range between £40,000 and £75,000, with a minimum grant amount of £25,000.
To be eligible, projects must involve new buildings, refurbishment, or equipment and must include capital costs of at least £50,000. There must also be a shortfall in capital funding of at least £25,000.
Certain projects are not eligible for funding. These include the purchase of land or existing buildings, grants to individuals or via conduit organisations, overhead and maintenance costs, VAT, non-specific fundraising appeals, salaries, running costs, promotional materials, loan repayments, and projects already completed or due to be completed before any grant is awarded.
To qualify, applicants must be registered charities or local authorities. Where relevant, they should hold at least a ‘Good’ rating from a regulator such as the CQC or Ofsted.
Projects will not be considered if mental health support is only a minor part of a charity’s work, or if they involve support centres for conditions like cancer or MS, hospital-based clinical care, carers’ organisations, respite services, ex-armed forces charities not directly focused on mental health or physical disabilities, or any sports, leisure, arts, or music-related initiatives.
