The ICGEB-SAWBP PhD Fellowship Scheme, jointly offered by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, invites applications from South African women researchers seeking to pursue doctoral studies in Biotechnology at the Cape Town Component.
The focus of the programme is on proposed doctoral research projects that are innovative and fall within one of the ICGEB Cape Town Component macro areas of research, namely: Infectious Diseases, Non-Communicable Diseases, Bioinformatics, Plant Systems Biology and Virology.
This three-year fellowship offers an attractive package that includes tuition coverage at the University of Cape Town, a stipend, access to the latest research methodologies, opportunities for mentoring and peer-to-peer learning, and immersion in a world-class international scientific environment. Additional mobility support is available for research visits to other ICGEB Components in Trieste, Italy, and New Delhi, India.
Applicants must be female, hold South African citizenship or permanent residency with a valid South African ID number, and be eligible for selection based on preference given to Black and disabled applicants. A crucial requirement is the submission of an endorsement letter from an ICGEB Cape Town Group Leader, who should be contacted in advance to discuss the proposed research project. Proof of an MSc degree, or a letter confirming intention to submit an MSc thesis, must also be included at the time of application, with the MSc degree itself required before commencement.
The fellowship provides ZAR 219,749 per year, covering tuition and personal support, with additional funding for international research mobility within the ICGEB network.
