The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund is launching a new initiative in Daykundi Province, Afghanistan, aimed at strengthening the local health sector while building the capacity of emerging and smaller NGOs.
This opportunity is designed to give these organizations hands-on experience in implementing health-related projects, with the long-term goal of equipping them to manage larger and more complex health sector initiatives in the future.
The program will address a wide range of critical health needs in the region, including general healthcare, maternal and newborn health, immunization, and emergency health services. It emphasizes the importance of technical support at national, regional, and provincial levels, alongside efforts to create an enabling environment for sustainable healthcare delivery.
A key component of the initiative will focus on emergency preparedness and response, particularly for outbreaks such as acute watery diarrhea and cholera, measles, and COVID-19, ensuring swift and coordinated action during health crises. The program will also work to strengthen health systems by supporting the winterization of birthing centers and health facilities, ensuring continuity of care even in harsh seasonal conditions.
Service delivery at both primary healthcare and community levels will be enhanced through improved quality of care and technical support for frontline health workers. Additionally, the program will incorporate social and behavior change strategies to boost health awareness and generate demand for essential health services within the community.
Through this comprehensive approach, UNICEF aims to build resilient local health systems, improve health outcomes, and empower smaller NGOs to play a stronger role in advancing healthcare in Afghanistan.
