Deadline: 15-Oct-2025
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has released a Notice of Funding Opportunity inviting Center Core (P30) applications for its Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratories (AITC) Program.
This initiative is designed to accelerate the development and implementation of innovative AI and technology-based approaches to advance research on aging and Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). By fostering collaboration across sectors and disciplines, the program aims to transform how technology supports the health and well-being of older adults.
The AITC Program will serve as a national resource, supporting research projects that create and deploy cutting-edge AI solutions to meet urgent priorities in aging and AD/ADRD. It will promote rapid responses to emerging developments in AI and technology, ensuring that new tools can be applied effectively in this evolving landscape. A key focus of the program is to work closely with a broad network of stakeholders to address algorithmic fairness and ensure that AI solutions are appropriate for individuals experiencing cognitive decline or impairment.
Central to the program’s structure, each funded Collaboratory will work in coordination with the AITC Coordinating Center (AITCC), which will act as a hub to align activities across all funded sites. The AITCC will also support a centralized Stakeholder Engagement Team to ensure that AI and technology solutions developed by the Collaboratories are accessible, adoptable, and designed with direct input from end users, including older adults, people living with dementia, and their caregivers.
Applicants are expected to build collaborative infrastructures that unite investigators from academia, non-profit organizations, healthcare systems, and other sectors. Projects should focus on designing or applying AI and technological innovations relevant to NIA’s scientific priorities, while also addressing ethical challenges in this space. Incorporating best practices from the fields of aging and dementia research will be essential to ensure the safe and responsible use of new technologies.
NIA plans to commit $19.6 million in FY 2026 to fund four awards, with each award capped at $4.9 million in total costs per year. Application budgets are limited to $4 million in direct costs annually, and the maximum project period is five years.
Eligible applicants include a broad range of organizations such as higher education institutions, non-profits, for-profit entities, local and state governments, tribal governments, federal agencies, and community-based organizations. By supporting these diverse partners, the AITC Program seeks to create a nimble, collaborative ecosystem that accelerates AI-driven discoveries and improves care, support, and quality of life for older adults and their caregivers.
