Nominations are open for Canada Gairdner Awards that recognize the world’s most creative and accomplished biomedical scientists who are advancing humanity and the world. The awards Sponsored by the Canada foundation that was establish in 957 with the main goal of recognizing and rewarding international excellence in fundamental research impacting human health.
The Gairdner Foundation is committed to increasing the diversity and gender equity of Gairdner awards. More than 350 awards in 30 countries have been bestowed and of those awardees, 84 have gone on to receive Nobel Prizes.
Annually, seven awards are given: five Canada Gairdner International Awards for biomedical research, one John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, specifically for impact on global health issues, and one Canada Gairdner Wightman Award, reserved for a Canadian.
Funding Information
The Canada Gairdner Awards are $100,000 awards given for breakthrough discoveries in biomedical science.
Eligibility Criteria
- Biomedical scientists from any country who have made breakthrough discoveries that can lead to improvements in the practice of medicine and the alleviation of human suffering receive the Canada Gairdner International Award.
- The Canada Gairdner Global Health Award goes to a person from any country whose scientific advances have made, or have the potential to make, a significant impact on health outcomes in the developing world.
- The Canada Gairdner Wightman Award goes to an accomplished scientist who has been a leader in medicine in Canada.
