Deadline: 09-Sep-2025
Applications are now open for the Global Grants for Gut Health, a competitive funding program supporting innovative, investigator-led research into the human gut microbiota. Jointly funded by Yakult and Nature Portfolio, the initiative aims to advance understanding of how the gut microbiome affects human health, especially in relation to diet, microbial diversity, and barrier homeostasis. Researchers are encouraged to investigate the impact of specific dietary components—like fiber, polyphenols, and fatty acids—on gut function and immune responses.
The program invites proposals for one-year laboratory or clinical research projects that explore the relationship between diet, microbial composition, and gut barrier function. Projects may apply for up to $100,000 in direct costs, plus up to 10% of that amount for indirect costs, with the total grant period not exceeding 12 months.
Eligible direct costs include staff salaries, travel, materials, software, publication fees, ethical approvals, and subcontracting. Capital equipment over $10,000, education costs, and standard living expenses are not eligible. Applicants must reside in a country where it is lawful to receive the funds, hold a doctorate or medical degree, and have at least five years of postdoctoral experience. Only one application per eligible individual is allowed.
Applicants must ensure their proposals are approved by their institution and meet all legal, ethical, and procedural research requirements. Research should be original, well-designed, and focused on uncovering mechanisms of action between the host and the gut microbiota. Proposals will be judged on scientific quality, potential impact, applicant experience, and value for money.
Mid-term reports are required by the seventh month and should summarize progress, findings, challenges, remaining work, and upcoming publications. The grants are open globally, excluding countries with legal restrictions such as Iran, Syria, and North Korea.
