Deadline: 1 August 2017
The Open Society Public Health Program is pleased to invite applications for participation in a special seminar, Changing the Narrative on Roma in Healthcare Settings, to be held on October 24-26, 2017, in Ohrid, Macedonia.
The seminar will consist of keynote lectures and small-group training in the fundamentals of narrative approaches to healthcare. These will explore how narratives shape Roma patients’ experience of ill health and the healthcare system. Through participatory exercises and theoretical discussions, participants will explore how the language healthcare workers use and the stories they tell shape the treatment and experiences of Roma people within the healthcare system.
Participants will investigate how healthcare professionals listen to Roma patients, and how that listening impacts the healthcare relationship. Seminar attendees will also discuss the concept of human rights in patient care, and examine how it illuminates issues of bias, discrimination, and social exclusion that often reinforce abuse of Roma patients. As a group, we will begin to develop strategies to transform narratives about Roma in the context of healthcare.
