Are you an active journalist interested in health? Then Thomson Reuters Foundation wants to hear from you! Interested journalists, based across the Middle East, are invited to apply for the Raising the Standard of Health Care News Coverage Training Program.
The six-week program will include:
- Reporting according to the Reuters Principles of Trust (the same principles of accuracy, independence and freedom from bias that Reuters News uses every day)
- Introduction to key terms and concepts related to health, and the ability to simplify and make these terms and concepts accessible to the masses.
- Sound news judgment and reliable sources.
- Ethical guidelines, including defamation and legal loopholes, and empathetic interviewing skills for use with vulnerable individuals.
- Stories with a humanitarian impact, with a special focus on vulnerable and/or marginalized groups.
- The role of journalists in covering health care systems and policies and improving public access to them.
- Provide a solutions approach to journalism, with an emphasis on critical reporting and analysis of social responses.
- A collection of seminars in digital skills on topics such as digital news gathering, data visualization techniques, countering misinformation, social media promotion, online presence, and journalist safety.
- Access to industry experts, with opportunities for question-and-answer sessions with leading healthcare professionals in the region.
- A fully funded trip to Dubai to attend a personal training workshop from the course.
In addition to the above, the program works to foster communication between like-minded journalists across the Middle East region. Emphasis will be placed on working collaboratively and strengthening relationships to collectively drive stronger healthcare coverage across the eleven focus countries.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be full-time journalists or regular contributors working for media organizations located in the following countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
- Applicants must have a minimum of two years of professional experience. You will need to submit a 250-word statement as part of your application explaining why you would benefit from participating in this programme, highlighting your interest in healthcare reporting, and how you plan to use what you learn in your professional work.
- Once selected, you will need to submit a letter from your managing editor supporting your participation in this program, including a commitment to publish a focused story TRF This will only be requested by you on healthcare if you are selected to participate in the in-session orientation programme.
