The World Food Programme (WFP) is expanding its efforts to support food security, health, and nutrition across multiple regions in Ethiopia, including Tigrai, Amara, Afar, Oromia, and Somali.
This comprehensive initiative targets the most vulnerable populations affected by crises, including refugees, aiming to provide immediate access to safe, adequate, and nutritious food.
The program focuses on delivering critical food assistance to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from shocks such as conflict, drought, and displacement. Special attention is given to the nutritional needs of children aged 6 to 59 months, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, who receive targeted resource transfers to prevent and manage moderate wasting—a form of acute malnutrition.
In addition to food support, WFP addresses essential health areas, including adolescent sexual and reproductive health, child health, and maternal and newborn care, with a particular emphasis on emergency obstetric services. This integrated approach ensures that nutritional interventions are complemented by health services to improve overall wellbeing.
A key component of the program involves social and behavioural change communication, which educates communities on nutrition practices to prevent malnutrition and promote healthy behaviours. This community engagement helps build resilience and supports longer-term health and nutrition outcomes.
Through these coordinated efforts, WFP aims to ensure that crisis-affected individuals in Ethiopia not only survive immediate food insecurity but also move towards better health and nutritional status, enhancing their ability to recover and thrive despite ongoing challenges.
