Deadline: 11-Dec-2025
The Department of Industry, Science and Resources has announced the opening of the Medical Research Future Fund’s (MRFF) 2025 Research Data Infrastructure Grant Opportunity, designed to strengthen national health and medical research through investments in advanced data infrastructure
The key focus areas of this opportunity are Research Infrastructure and Capability and Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health. The grant emphasizes support for data registries, biobanks, data linkage platforms, informatics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, advanced clinical decision-making tools, wearables, and other emerging digital technologies to address areas of unmet medical need.
This initiative seeks to improve prevention, patient care, behavioural change, and health outcomes through projects that leverage multiple existing data infrastructures of different types, apply novel methodologies, and translate research outcomes into practical health benefits for Australians.
The 2025 Research Data Infrastructure Grant will provide up to $20 million over two years (2025–26 and 2026–27), with a maximum of $2.5 million available for a single project. Grants may fund 100% of eligible project costs. Projects must be completed within four years from the start date.
Eligible applicants include Australian medical research institutes, universities, corporate Commonwealth entities, and incorporated organisations with an Australian Business Number. Joint applications are encouraged, with a designated lead organisation responsible for project delivery. Ineligible applicants include individuals, partnerships, unincorporated associations, trusts (unless through an incorporated trustee), and organisations not incorporated in Australia.
Applications will be assessed against four key criteria: project impact, project methodology, capacity and capability of the research team, and overall value and risk. Applicants must also address consumer and community involvement, consideration of sex and gender diversity, and demonstrate strong governance and translation strategies.
The grant opportunity opened on 14 August 2025 and will close on 11 December 2025 at 5:00pm AEDT. Successful projects will be announced following a competitive, expert-reviewed process.
