The Indian Housing Block Grant Competitive Program (IHBG-COMP) provides competitive grant opportunities to eligible IHBG Formula recipients for eligible housing projects that increase the availability of affordable housing for low-income Tribal families.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced funding opportunities aimed at addressing the housing needs of Native American communities. With approximately $150 million available, this program prioritizes the construction, rehabilitation, and acquisition of affordable housing units to benefit low-income Native American families living on reservations and in other Indian areas.
The initiative places strong emphasis on projects that create new affordable housing to expand the stock available to low-income households, as well as rehabilitation efforts that extend the life of existing housing and improve living conditions. Acquisition of existing housing units to expand the availability of affordable options is also encouraged. Particular attention is given to meeting the needs of Tribal members experiencing homelessness, overcrowding, or living in substandard conditions without basic facilities such as plumbing or a kitchen.
Grant awards under this opportunity will range from a minimum of $500,000 to a maximum of $7.5 million. Projects are expected to be carried out over a performance and budget period of 60 months, giving recipients a sustained timeframe to complete meaningful housing developments.
Eligibility is limited to Native American tribal governments, tribal organizations, and Tribally Designated Housing Entities (TDHEs) that have previously been allocated Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) formula funding. Specific provisions apply to Native Alaskan Tribes, with eligibility restricted to those that received IHBG funding in Fiscal Year 2005 or meet particular requirements regarding TDHE designation. Individual applicants are not eligible.
By supporting new construction, rehabilitation, and acquisition efforts, HUD aims to alleviate housing challenges and improve living conditions for Native American communities while fostering long-term stability and resilience.
