Deadline: 31-Aug-2025
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is accepting applications for its Legal Protection Services for Rohingya Refugees program. This initiative aims to address the significant barriers that refugees in camps face in accessing justice.
Many refugees lack both information and physical access to formal justice mechanisms. To respond to this challenge, UNHCR, in partnership with legal service providers, offers a range of support including legal counselling, mediation, awareness-raising sessions, court representation, and help with filing police cases.
In 2024 alone, over 65,000 refugees received assistance through these services. The goal is to ensure fair, neutral, and impartial access to justice and reduce dependence on informal channels, which are often vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. This legal support helps uphold the rights of refugees and contributes to a safer community environment.
Security conditions in the camps have deteriorated, with 166 killings reported between 2023 and 2024. Legal services have become even more critical under these circumstances. Refugees need a safe way to report crimes, file legal complaints, and seek representation in court to access justice and obtain legal remedies.
The program falls under the protection sector, focusing on legal assistance and improving access to justice. By 2029, the intended impact is for forcibly displaced people to live with dignity and safety, supported by fair access to documentation and protection services. The initiative is expected to help create safer environments and offer effective legal case management.
The program will be implemented in Bangladesh, specifically in the Chittagong region, where a large number of Rohingya refugees currently reside.
