The AFS Global STEM Academies Program offers youth aged 15–17.5 a blended virtual and international experience focused on STEM, sustainability, and global competence. Participants complete a 12-week online curriculum followed by a four-week study abroad in Brazil, China, Egypt, or India, with full scholarships covering most program costs.

The AFS Global STEM Academies aim to cultivate young leaders in STEM, sustainability, and intercultural understanding. Scholars gain skills in:

• Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

• Sustainability and climate action, including green energy and biofuels

• Intercultural communication and global competence

• Social impact and community engagement

• Robotics, electric vehicles, alternative fuels, and sustainable technologies

• Arts, culture, language (Portuguese and Arabic), and wellness practices

The program combines virtual learning with in-person international immersion, ensuring students develop practical, global, and leadership skills.

Program Structure

Phase 1: Virtual Learning (12 Weeks)

• Conducted online from home with ~4 hours per week of engagement

• Includes workshops, e-learning modules, dialogue sessions, and student-led social impact projects

• Curriculum co-developed with the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy

• Focuses on addressing real-world sustainability challenges aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Phase 2: International Study Abroad (4 Weeks)

Selected scholars travel to one of four global destinations, each offering unique thematic experiences:

• China: Sustainable mobility, green energy, workshops in Beijing, Shanghai, and Ningbo, with hands-on activities

• Egypt: STREAM-focused exploration of robotics, green energy, sustainable technologies, and cultural immersion

• India: Blend of technology, sustainability, community service, mobility solutions, and cultural engagement

Scholarship Coverage

The program fully covers:

• Housing and meals

• Airfare and domestic transportation

• Program orientations, cultural tours, and field trips
