Deadline: 8-December-2025
The fellowship aims to support innovative research projects that explore how climate change has influenced the region’s past, is shaping its present, and will affect its future. By fostering a deeper understanding of climate dynamics in South Asia, it seeks to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions and policies that address the region’s unique climate challenges.
The selected Mittal Family Climate Fellow will be in residence for the academic year 2026–2027, from August 20, 2026, to May 20, 2027. During their residency, the fellow will work directly with a selected Faculty Mentor on their personal research project and fully engage with the intellectual life at the Mittal Institute and at Harvard.
Toward the end of the residency, the fellow will present their research in a Mittal Institute seminar moderated by their mentor. Fellows will also participate in grant and fellowship reviews, mentor graduate students, and collaborate on other events and projects at the Institute.
The fellowship offers a gross stipend of $50,885.71, prorated to the duration of the fellowship, and paid biweekly. Round-trip economy travel expenses and visa fees from South Asia to Boston will be reimbursed for participants residing in South Asia. However, fellows are responsible for arranging their own housing in Cambridge for the duration of their stay.
This is a Post-Doctoral Fellowship, open to candidates who have received their PhD, with preference given to those who earned their degree within the past five years. Scholars who have primarily been educated at institutions in South Asia and who have not previously accessed Harvard’s resources will be prioritized. Research proposals must be designed to foster deeper scholarly engagement on climate change, create new knowledge, and develop sustainable solutions across South Asia.
Applications require a five-page, double-spaced research plan, an updated curriculum vitae, a writing sample of up to ten pages, a scan of the PhD diploma, and two letters of recommendation addressed to ‘Members of the Selection Committee.’ All materials must be submitted via the ARIeS online application form. The application deadline is Monday, December 8, while letters of recommendation are due Wednesday, December 17.
