Deadline: 10 December 2025
The American Brain Tumor Association is requesting applications for its ABTA Discovery Grant Program to support both established and new scientists in discovering more about the causes, effects, diagnosis, and treatment of brain tumors.
The focus areas include Biomarkers of Risk, Disease Burden, and/or Treatment Response, Brain Tumor Biology, Clinical Research, Diagnosis, Drug Delivery, Etiology, Genetics, Imaging, Molecular/Genetic Epidemiology, Novel Therapeutics, and Risk Assessment.
Through its Discovery Grant, ABTA provides up to $50,000 over one year to encourage the development of new approaches that could advance the understanding and treatment of brain tumors and improve, extend and ultimately save the lives of patients. Award funds may be used for salary support, equipment and supply costs, travel related to the project, and data management and sharing.
The grant supports innovative research that explores early-stage scientific concepts capable of leading to further funding opportunities and major progress in brain tumor diagnosis and treatment. Investigators from disciplines outside traditional biological sciences are encouraged to apply, broadening the scope of discovery and collaboration across scientific fields.
Eligible applicants must hold a doctoral degree such as MD, PhD, DrPH, or DO and a full-time faculty position that began on or after September 1, 2018. Those within the first five years of their faculty appointment must include a Lead Mentor conducting brain tumor research at the same institution. The institution itself must be a non-profit entity and will serve as the administrator for the grant funds.
The ABTA emphasizes that projects should be feasible, achievable within the proposed timeframe, and scientifically sound. Reviewers will assess the research question’s significance and potential impact on the brain tumor field, the scientific merit and feasibility of the approach, the qualifications of the investigator and mentor, and the innovation of the proposed concept.
Recipients are also required to present their research findings at the ABTA’s National Conference following the conclusion of the grant term.
