Applications are now open for the Ability Central to foster collaboration and serving as a resource hub to the disability community.
They believe that the ability to communicate is a fundamental human right, and their mission is to ensure that more people enjoy this right fully.
Funding Information
- Approximately $1 million will be available for grants in 2022.
- Grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $20K –$100K.
- Depending on the nature of the request and the availability of funds, Ability Central may partially approve the amount requested.
- In addition to project-related operating costs, Ability Central allows applicants to include up to 25% of their request for general operating expenses in their budget.
- Applicants must show a 20% cash match for their requested project budget.
Types of Projects
Types of projects they are interested in funding:
- Capacity Building Projects that emphasize infrastructure improvement through strategic planning or leadership development. The applicant organization must have existing programs that serve the communication needs of people with disabilities.
- Research Projects that collect, examine, and evaluate data that will potentially impact the disability field and ultimately communication for people with disabilities.
- Innovation Projects that develop and test new communication/information access technologies and services that will impact the lives of people with disabilities. They requirethat the testing includesself-advocates/people with disabilities.
- Sustainable Training Projects (train the trainer, hybrid in-person/web content) to educate/train professionals in communication strategies serving people with disabilities. They favor programs that are intended to continue to serve people beyond the term of the grant itself.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicant must be:
- An organization which has a physical location in California (not an online entity) and provides services which benefit people with disabilities in California.
- Tax-exempt, public charity as defined under Section 501(c)3 of the US Internal Revenue Code, including schools, universities, or a project using a fiscal sponsor with 501(c)3 tax exempt status.
- Working on a project serving California that benefits communication and/or information access for people with disabilities.
