The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) is accepting applications for its Grant Programmes.
Aims
- The aims are:
- delivering targeted investment that leads to the sustainable reuse and management of historic buildings.
- supporting charities and social enterprises to take ownership of, develop and sustain new uses for historic buildings.
- championing the impact of heritage and community-led regeneration.
Types of Programmes
- There are currently two programmes open:
- Harnessing Heritage, the general grants programme; and Village Catalyst, targeted at projects led by charities or social enterprises in villages under 5,000 population, involving buildings which are either listed or in a Conservation Area.
- Village Catalyst is an innovative partnership programme with DfC, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and the NI Housing Executive. The overall aim is to help target rural poverty and social isolation via the reuse of historic buildings.
Categories
- Harnessing Heritage programme Project Viability Grant (PVG) or Village Catalyst PVG
- Project Viability Grants are designed to fund studies to look at potential uses for a building and at its current condition, and to produce a Viability Report to a standard template.
- Harnessing Heritage programme Project Development Grant (PDG)
- Project Development Grants are intended to assist an organisation to cover some of the costs of developing and co-ordinating a project to enable it to secure capital funding and take it towards the start of work on site.
- Village Catalyst Project Development Grant (PDG)

Duration
- Project length: Up to one year
Funding Priorities
- They will prioritise projects that:
- involve a new use of a vacant historic building
- are in the top 30% most deprived areas
- involve and support diverse and marginalised communities
- have a strong focus on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency
- contribute to local regeneration schemes
Eligibility Criteria
- Your organisation must be one of the following not-for-private-profit organisations:
- Unincorporated charities (for Project Viability Grants only)
- Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs)
- Charitable Companies Limited by Guarantee
- Community Benefit Societies
- Not-for-private-profit Companies Limited by Guarantee
- Community Interest Companies (CICs) Limited by Guarantee Co-operative
Ineligibility Criteria
- They will not fund:
- Private individuals
- Local authorities or other public sector bodies (unless applying on behalf of an organisation still in formation)
- Universities, colleges and other mainstream educational institutions, including independent schools
- For profit companies, unless in a partnership led by a not-for-profit organisation
- Unincorporated organisations (e.g. charitable trusts and associations) that are not intending to incorporate
