The U.S. Embassy Zambia Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Department of State announces a Request for Statements of Interest (RSOI) from organizations interested in applying for funding through the American Spaces program for proposals that strengthen ties and build relationships between the United States and Zambia, to take place at one of their American Spaces cultural centers.
Public Affairs invites organizations interested in potential funding to submit Statements of Interest outlining program concepts that reflect this goal.
Purpose of Small Grants
- American Spaces Zambia invites proposals for programs at one of our three cultural centers that strengthen ties and build relationships between the U.S. and Zambia through activities that highlight shared values, goals, and cooperation. The U.S. Embassy operates three American Spaces in Zambia:
- The American Center at the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka,
- The American Corner at National Institute of Public Administration in Lusaka,
- And The American Corner at Copperbelt University in Kitwe.
Priority Areas
- American Spaces is currently seeking proposals in the following priority areas:
- Science and technology, including programs that incorporate 3D printing, robotics, coding, graphic design, engineering, and scientific discovery. Preference is given to an organization that can coordinate ongoing Makerspace programming at our American Corners (NIPA and CBU) over the course of the grant period;
- Promoting democracy and political participation among the public and/or youth, including leadership development, civic education, and the promotion of human rights;
- Promoting entrepreneurship and small business development;
- Support continuing engagement with U.S. government exchange program alumni and connecting them to local audiences through alumni programs in which credible, local voices can share firsthand information about the United States and American values.
Strategic Areas
They also seek proposals in the following key strategic areas:
- Increasing Zambians’ pursuit of higher education in the United States.
- Promoting economic opportunity and democratic participation through film or the arts;
- Empowerment of women, youth, or other marginalized groups;
- Promoting inclusion of people with disabilities including through sports, civic engagement, economic activity, and other aspects of society.
- Promoting sports diplomacy or a shared interest in sports
Funding Information
- Length of performance period: up to 12 months
- Number of awards anticipated: at least two
- Award amounts: Minimum of $2,000 and maximum of $8,000
Participants and Audiences: Programs may be geared to a variety of audiences, depending on the topic. Proposals will be evaluated based on a well-reasoned strategy for the intended audience, as well as appropriate inclusivity, whether based on gender, religion, age, or disability.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Public Affairs Section encourages applications from:
- Registered not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/nongovernmental organizations with programming experience
- Individuals
- Non-profit or governmental educational institutions
- Applicants should be able to document their experience implementing similar projects. Forprofit businesses or commercial entities are not eligible to apply.
