The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network in Albania has launched a call for investigative stories, which offered grants for four journalists to produce articles on topics related to environment.
The call is part of the project “Using Big Data and Multimedia to Boost Quality and Independent Journalism in Albania”, supported by the European Union.
The goal of the project is to create an enabling environment for Albanian journalists to produce independent content through training, mentoring, technical and financial support, and close cooperation with civil society, so improving freedom of expression and strengthening media pluralism in Albania.
Priorities
Priority in the selection will be given to the proposals which include one of the following topics, suggested as a priority during a round table organized between journalists and civil society representatives during June 2022:
- Impact on the environment and health of communities from the oil extraction or mining industries;
- Consequences of changing the map of protected areas;
- Heating Global warming and its impact on the environment and the local economy;
- Recycling, collection and management of urban waste;
- Threats to the Albanian flora and fauna – effectiveness of the implemented measures;
- Impact Environmental impact of energy projects – problems with environmental impact assessments;
- Impunity for environmental crimes.
Details
The workshop was attended by two dozen civil society activists and journalists, who debated on important topics that should be investigated in the field of the environment as well as on the need to build stronger communication and cooperation between civil society organizations and journalists.
The journalists awarded through this call will have around three months to dig deeper and research their ideas and will also have the opportunity to work with experienced editors as mentors to guide them through the process of writing in accordance with BIRN standards.
Funding Information
Selected applicants, who will receive a scholarship of EUR 1,200 (minus personal income tax), will have a period of three months to complete their investigation and prepare the article for publication.
Eligibility Criteria
All journalists in Albania, employed by other media or in the free profession, have the right to apply.
Candidates must formulate a detailed proposal for the competition. Proposals should aim to expose concrete cases of lack of law enforcement, corruption and lack of transparency regarding environmental issues.
