Applications are now open for the California Humanities Recovery Grants to strengthen the short- and long-term capacity of California-based humanities organizations as they plan and deliver rich humanities-based learning experiences for the people of California.
This program will direct funds for capacity-building project support that will enable applicants to meet the needs of their communities and respond to the current and long-term challenges of the pandemic.
The primary purpose of the California Humanities Recovery Grants is to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the coronavirus.
This funding is meant to assist public humanities organizations and cultural institutions.
Funding Information
- Applicants may request between $2,000 and $10,000, requested amount should not exceed more than 5% of the applicant’s current annual operating budget.
Types of Activities
Appropriate types of activities include, but are not limited to:
- Strategic planning and capacity-building efforts related to preparing, responding to, and recovering from the coronavirus.
- Technical assistance provided by experts (individuals or organizations) that will directly enhance public humanities programming capabilities.
- Professional development activities that will directly impact the applicant’s programming capacity (acquisition of skills, knowledge, or expertise gained through training, coaching, or participation in humanities field learning experiences).
- Technical/consultant needs related to a digital transition or in support of preservation and access programs. Note: Equipment costs cannot exceed 20% of the award.
- Expansion, due to the effects of the coronavirus, of outdoor and virtual humanities programming and activities, from traditional environments to those that are more accessible.
- Equity assessments and planning related to the coronavirus and the economic crisis.
- Communicative and collaborative activities that will promote partnership, networking, and leveraging the resources of multiple public humanities providers resulting in enhanced programming capacity.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications will be accepted from California-based public agencies and California-based nonprofit organizations, accredited public and 501(c)(3) institutions of higher education, state and local government agencies, and federally recognized Native American tribal governments with a minimum two-year organizational history.
- Applicants that would like to apply under an eligible fiscal sponsor must be able to demonstrate that the fiscal sponsor will make substantive contributions to the success of the project.
- Applicants will be accepted from recognized humanities provider organizations (museum, library, archive, historical society, cultural center, public media outlets, humanities department or division of a K-12 educational institution, college, university, or tribal government) AND other organizations that can demonstrate a substantial track record of public humanities work within the past five years.
- Prior grant history with California Humanities is NOT required.
