The United Nations Children’s Fund is seeking expression of interests to improve the school environment of 10 educational institutions in Ucayali, ensuring access to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene services and promoting environmental education and menstrual health, with a focus on gender, interculturality, and climate resilience.
Objectives

- Improve the knowledge of students and the educational community regarding hygiene, health, and dignified menstruation management through community mobilization and advocacy.
- Improve the environmental competencies of secondary school students through the Climate Generation Course.

Expected Outcomes
- WASH diagnosis of educational establishments: UNICEF Peru will assess the needs of each prioritized educational institution and develop a diagnosis and improvement plan to guarantee access to safe drinking water, quality sanitation services, and effective solid waste management in accordance with the WINS strategy.
- Infrastructure improvements: Based on the diagnosis, rehabilitation and improvement works will be carried out on the drinking water supply infrastructure and sanitation facilities that meet quality standards based on school design regulations and with a climate resilience approach.
- Climate Generation 2025 Course: Promote each of the three editions of the Climate Generation 2025 Course in a timely manner, according to the established schedule. This activity should include the following tasks:
- Focus on secondary level II.EE. that have managers, teachers and students committed, in order to promote their enrollment in the course.
- Raise awareness among educational authorities, teachers, and students about the importance of strengthening environmental skills to address the effects of climate change.
- Provide continuous support to students to ensure completion of the course modules and obtaining your certificate of completion.
- Training on proper hygiene practices and climate resilience: Participatory training on water, sanitation, and healthy hygiene practices (handwashing, proper menstrual management, proper use of water and sanitation infrastructure, solid waste management, etc.) will be provided to students, teachers, and parents in the school community, complementing infrastructure improvements.
- Behavior Change Communication: To expand its reach, UNICEF Peru will use visual aids as part of its communication approach to reinforce good hygiene practices, encourage students to become hygiene ambassadors, and actively promote cleanliness in schools and communities, using a social and behavior change (SBC) approach.
- Accountability: UNICEF and the Implementing Partner commit to strengthening the knowledge and practice of feedback and accountability to affected populations (AAP).
- Sustainability: Activities will be coordinated with local government and community authorities, both in the education and water and sanitation sectors.
Eligible Activities
- The project will promote hygiene, improve conditions for access to quality education, and support local interventions to establish equitable and sustainable access to safe drinking water and essential sanitation services in schools.
- It will also strengthen adolescent participation in climate action through educational content on climate change, such as that covered in the Climate Generation course, promoting environmental awareness, leadership, and commitment in schools.
Beneficiaries
- 10 prioritized educational centers (6 previously intervened schools and 4 additional schools)
- Training for students and the educational community on hygiene promotion, dignified menstruation management, ecoefficient use of water, proper use of water and sanitation facilities, solid waste management, and disaster risks.
- 5,000 students in Ucayali.
- 100 teachers and local officials in Ucayali.
- 600 teenagers receive their certificate of completion of the Climate Generation Course within the 3 editions that will take place between June and December 2025.
