The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is seeking proposals for the COVID-19 Support for Indigenous and Community Heritage Areas (ICCAs) in Tunisia.
Goals
- Phase 2 of the Global ICCA Support Initiative (GSI) has been expanded to provide support for Community Heritage Areas and Territories (ICCAs), in forty-five (45) countries participating in the GEF Small Grants Program (SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
- The call for projects is part of the 7th operational phase (OP7, 2020-2024) of the program in Tunisia and as part of the contribution of efforts to the response to COVID-19.

- Transmission of knowledge traditional medicine

- Local bio-circular economy approaches based on reciprocity
Types
- Three types of CICA:
- Defined ICCAs – These are ICCAs that currently have the three essential characteristics of a strong community-territory relationship, a well-functioning governance institution, and positive outcomes for nature and the community
- ICCAs Disturbed – These ICCAs once had all three characteristics, but no longer do (although they may still hold one or two) due to disturbances that the community still thinks they can neutralize
- Desired ICCAs – These are ICCAs that never had these three characteristics (although they m ay have one or two today) but have the potential to acquire all three through a new (or effectively renewed) community mobilization.
Funding Information
Individual APAC COVID-19 projects should have a maximum duration of 12 months and have a maximum budget of 50,000.00 USD. All proposals will be reviewed and approved by the SGP National Steering Committee (NSC)
Eligible Activities
- Strengthening sustainable and biodiversity-friendly food production systems in ICCAs focusing on agroecology and agroforestry techniques.
- Promoting sustainable and regulated consumption of wildlife through good governance, customary regulation and raising awareness
- Documentation and transmission of sustainable harvesting techniques, quality control and transmission of traditional medicinal practices
- Mapping and demarcation to increase territorial zoning, delimitation/isolation, buffer zones and defense of conserved areas.
Eligibility Criteria
- Tunisian national and local civil society organizations (including community organizations, NGOs and associations) are encouraged to apply
- Civil society organizations (CSOs) wishing to apply for the APAC COVID-19 initiative will have to submit an application in line with the socio-economic, cultural and health context of Tunisia.
- Projects mu st also:
- Aligned with the new approach of the 3I support program: Innovation, Inclusion and Impact.
- Fully comply with the guidelines of this call for projects to support ICCAs by focusing on innovative, inclusive and scalable initiatives, and to encourage multi-stakeholder partnerships at the local level.
- Take into consideration the national environmental context and be aligned with the objectives of the national environment and sustainable development strategy (SNDD)
- Be coherent and strategic
- Be aligned with the concept of support for ICCAs fall within the typical framework of the projects/activities to be supported within the framework of this call for projects
- Involve local organizations and rely on local scientific and technical resources
- Rely on community participation when designing, implementing and evaluating projects.
- Take into consideration the gender approach and involve young people
- Have a clear impact on the community and on the conservation of biodiversity, the climate resilience and improved livelihoods
- Be subject to co-financing: the GEF/UNDP PMF applies the principle of co-financing between relevant project partners (including input from beneficiary CSO and other partners). Co-financing in kind and in cash is required (equivalent to at least 50% of the total project amount, 25% in kind and 25% in cash).
- Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to protect and defend heritage areas and territories community (ICCAs);
- Knowledge and awareness of biodiversity conservation efforts at the national level;
- Experience in organizing and conducting consultations and capacity building activities with local communities;
- Ability to produce high quality written reports in accordance with deadlines;
- Familiarity with key issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), particularly as the y relates to local communities, will be considered an asset.
