The UN Women is accepting proposals to foster Social Cohesion and Integration between Migrant and Host Community Women.
Outcomes
- The programme aims to achieve the following three outcomes:
- The South African government and relevant stakeholders develop and implement gender-responsive migration policies, laws and services.
- Migrant and host community women have access to decent work.
- Governments and relevant international human rights bodies ensure the promotion and protection of migrant women’s rights through strengthened global norms and standards.
General overview of services required/results
- Under Outcome 2 of the Making Migration Safe for Women programme in South Africa, UN Women plans to engage a national responsible party to facilitate community dialogues in six communities across Gauteng, the Western Cape and other identified areas of concern. These dialogues will aim to foster social cohesion and integration between migrant and host community women. A minimum of 300 participants should be reached, comprising approximately 30% migrant women and 70% host community members (both male and female).
- The community dialogues will be complemented by an online public opinion survey on to capture perceptions of migrant women. The survey should target at least 5,000 respondents across a broad socio-economic and demographic representation of the South African population.
- Through localized and participatory strategies to address social cohesion challenges, the responsible party will support social integration, promote peace and equality, and help reduce xenophobia and related intolerance by fostering more positive perceptions of migrant women at the community level.
Description of required services/results
- UN Women plans to engage a national responsible party to implement the following activities across six communities in Gauteng, the Western Cape and other identified areas of concern. A minimum of 300 individuals should be engaged in total, with approximately 30% migrant women and 70% host community members (both male and female):
- Facilitate community dialogues on the benefits of social cohesion and positive socio-economic contributions of migrant women to promote integration, peace and equality, and reduce xenophobia and related intolerance at the community level.
- Conduct an online public opinion survey to assess perceptions of migrant women, targeting a sample of at least 5,000 respondents across a broad socio-economic and demographic representation of the South African population.
- Develop and implement a campaign to challenge negative perceptions of migrant populations, raise awareness of the positive contributions of migrant women workers, and promote joint community efforts to prevent discrimination against migrant women.
- Provide information and referrals for psycho-social support and counselling services for individuals experiencing gender-based violence and discrimination based on their status as migrant women.
- The responsible party is expected to adopt a participatory, inclusive and gender-responsive approach throughout implementation, with particular sensitivity to social cohesion challenges and the additional vulnerabilities and challenges faced by migrant women.

- The budget range for this proposal should be 90,000 USD – 100,000 USD

- Timeframe: 1 July 2025 (or as soon as possible) – 30 June 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
- Technical/functional competencies required
- Legally registered and authorized to operate in South Africa for at least five years.
- Knowledge of South Africa’s legal and policy frameworks on migration and related topics, including the National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.
- Experience in programme design, management and development of tools to measure impact.
- Experience in designing and implementing social cohesion initiates that promote dialogue and trust-building between migrant and host communities.
- Recognized as a leading voice in facilitating constructive and inclusive community engagement, fostering social cohesion and promoting diversity regardless of gender, race or nationality.
- Experience managing and facilitating consultative processes with diverse groups, particularly at community level.
- Strong understanding of the specific needs, challenges and vulnerabilities of migrant women and girls.
- Demonstrated organizational culture of accountability and commitment to delivering results.
