The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has launched the 2021-22 Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program to support changing demographics by developing and implementing policies and plans, undertaking projects that enable them to age in place, and facilitating the creation of age-friendly communities.
Funding Streams
- Stream 1: Age-Friendly Assessments, Action Plans & Planning – The intent of this funding stream is to support communities to develop or update assessments or plans in order to support aging in place and to facilitate the creation of age-friendly communities. The maximum grant under Stream 1 is $10,000. Collaboration between two or more communities is strongly encouraged. Applications demonstrating a regional approach may be eligible for up to $15,000.
- Stream 2: Age-Friendly Projects – The intent of this funding stream is to support communities to undertake projects that enable individuals to age in place and facilitate the creation of age-friendly communities. The maximum grant under Stream 2 is $10,000. Collaboration between two or more communities is strongly encouraged. Applications demonstrating a regional approach may be eligible for up to $15,000.
Principles
Applicants should consider the following guiding principles when applying:
- Community Driven and Flexible – solutions are based on local priorities and plans;
- Catalyst for Action and Sustainability – activities enable communities to enhance and improve services over time;
- Focus on Age-Friendly Domains – activities are focused on one or more of the eight age-friendly community domains with clear outcomes;
- Coordinated – activities are coordinated to support community-based outcomes and avoid duplication among programs and projects;
- Lifespan Perspective – the principles of universal design are applied to the physical and social environments to create equitable experiences for all, regardless of age or ability.
- Inclusive – activities consider equity and inclusion for all populations, including Indigenous peoples, Newcomers, and individuals who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.
Eligible Projects
Eligible projects are new community planning or projects that are undertaken by municipal and/or indigenous governments/communities that demonstrate alignment with the guiding principles of the program. In addition, to qualify for funding, projects must:
- Be not-for-profit in nature; and
- Focus on one or more of the eight domains of age-friendly communities identified by the World Health Organization:
- Outdoor spaces and buildings
- Transportation
- Housing
- Respect and social Inclusion
- Social participation
- Communication and information
- Civic participation and employment opportunities
- Community support and health services
Eligibility Criteria
- Municipal and indigenous governments/communities in NL are eligible to apply for either Stream 1 or Stream 2 funding. Local service districts, businesses, crown corporations, public health and education institutions and individuals are not eligible to apply, but are encouraged to partner with eligible applicants.
