The Edmonton Community Foundation’s BIPOC Grants provide support for organizations that are led-by and serve communities who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color across the Greater Edmonton Area.
These grants are intended to help BIPOC-led and -serving organizations extend their existing programming, try new and innovative programming, improve their organizational capacity, purchase equipment and make renovations, and engage and empower BIPOC communities.
Funding Information
- Up to $750,000 is available for BIPOC grants for 2025. Dependent upon the applicant pool, they are budgeting to fund:
- 5-10 projects up to $50,000 – limited to charities
- 10-20 projects up to $25,000 – they recommend smaller charities, Non-Profit Organizations and grassroots organizations applying in partnership with a charitable organization to apply
Eligibility Criteria
- Organizations who are:
- BIPOC-led
- Led by’ refers to organizations that have individuals at different levels of the organization (including board and senior leadership) with direct lived experience and/or connections to and within the same communities they seek to serve.
- BIPOC-serving
- ‘Serving’ refers to organizations that have a strong representation of equity- deserving community within their client base, may have strong or developing DEI policies and practices – but are not specifically focused on an equity-deserving community.
- In good standing with ECF. (i.e. Have submitted reports for previous BIPOC grants received from ECF.
- Based in and serve the Greater Edmonton Area. For Indigenous organizations, based in and serve within Treaty 6 Territory.
- A Registered Canadian Charity
- Organizations who are NOT a Canadian Charity can work in partnership with an existing Canadian Charity or other qualified donee.
- Charities can submit one application for their own organization but can submit any number of applications that are in partnership with BIPOC organization.
- BIPOC-led
Ineligibility Criteria
- Grants are not available for the following:
- Deficit funding
- Retroactive funding (any expenses incurred prior to the decision date)
- Endowments
- Medical equipment
- Funding to replace government cuts
- Travel outside the Greater Edmonton Area
- Capital campaigns and purchase of land and/or buildings
- Private schools, charter schools, or post-secondary institutions, including their foundations
- Other funders and organizations whose primary purpose is to raise money for a third party
- Grants primarily benefitting individuals (i.e. scholarships, bursaries, gift cards, vouchers, etc.)
- Fundraising events (such as tickets, raffles, auctions, or tournaments) or annual fundraising appeals
- Faith-based organizations and activities that require religious participation by those receiving services or that are providing religious education
- National or provincial initiatives without specific benefit to Edmonton; initiatives that have specific benefit to Edmonton will be considered for a proportional request.
