The First 5 Solano Children and Families Commission is currently accepting applications for the Emergency Response Fund. The application is open to any agency or business that serves children ages 0-5 in Solano County. Priority will be given to applicants that are currently open and providing in-person care to children ages 0-5.
The First 5 Solano Commission was established by an ordinance passed by the Solano County Board of Supervisors on June 8, 1999. The Commission funds many programs within the community and First 5 funds are an integral part of the safety net for children’s and family programs in Solano County. The Commission works closely with community partners to continue to find ways to ensure these critical community investments.
Available Equipment/Materials
- No-Touch Forehead Thermometer:
- Infrared forehead thermometer to take temperatures upon entry to child care or program to screen for one symptom of COVID-19 prior to in-person services.
- Temperature Screening Kiosk with Face Recognition:
- Temperature kiosk to take temperatures for larger groups, such as child care centres. The kiosk can be programmed to detect specific faces and record temperatures to screen for one symptom of COVID-19 prior to in-person services. This equipment is available to child care centers with 2 or more classrooms.
- 3. 32” x 24” Sneeze Guard:
- A clear acrylic barrier, often used at reception desks prior to COVID-19 screening or for brief interactions.
- Room Dividers:
- Room divider approximately 5’ x 4’ that can be used either vertically or horizontally. Examples of how these may be used include setting up learning stations if social distancing is difficult, divide sleeping areas, or create a space to isolate children who are symptomatic until they can be picked up.
- Touchless Dispenser for Soap or Hand Sanitizer:
- Dispenser that uses infrared motion sensor to dispense gel based soap or hand sanitizer. Please note this item requires 3 AA batteries and gel soap or gel hand sanitizer, which are not included.
- HEPA Air Purifier for Rooms Up To 500 sq feet:
- HEPA air purifier to trap harmful air particles. Has been noted by the EPA as one component of an overall protocol to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The purifier may be used in areas smaller than 500 sq feet. If the coverage area is over 500 sq feet, multiple purifiers may be needed for adequate filtration. Filters need to be replaced based on the schedule of the model. One additional replacement filter will be included.
- Individual Learning Bins for Children Ages 3-5:
- Plastic bins filled with age-appropriate preschool supplies and designed for one bin per child to assist with decreasing sharing of consumable supplies. Bins will be approximately 17”x 12” x 7” or smaller and will be stackable. Supplies may include, but will not be limited to:
- Crayons;
- Pencils;
- Glue sticks;
- Preschool scissors;
- Washable markers;
- Books;
- Paint and other art supplies.
- Plastic bins filled with age-appropriate preschool supplies and designed for one bin per child to assist with decreasing sharing of consumable supplies. Bins will be approximately 17”x 12” x 7” or smaller and will be stackable. Supplies may include, but will not be limited to:
- The materials and equipment mentioned above are examples for selection purposes. The actual items provided may differ slightly based on pricing and availability at the time of ordering.
- Each item has a maximum number that will be considered in the first review of applications. However, should agency/business have a need for a higher number of items than indicated in the maximum, there is an opportunity in the application to indicate the total number applicants could use and describe their need. Requests over maximums will be fulfilled based on available funding after the equipment/materials in the first review of applications have been fulfilled.
- Once submitted and approved by First 5 Solano, First 5 Solano will obtain the items and applicants will be required to pick up the items at an arranged time at the First 5 Solano office at 3375 Sonoma Blvd, Ste 30, Vallejo. At the time of pick up, applicants will be required to sign an agreement that the items will be used for the purposes of serving children ages 0-5 for COVID-19 response.
Eligibility Criteria
In this round of grants, applications are being accepted for materials and equipment to support mitigating the spread of COVID-19, including the following:
- No-touch forehead thermometer (Max=2);
- Temperature screening kiosk with face recognition (Max 1; for child care centers with 2 or more classrooms only);
- 32″x24″ sneeze guard (Max=4);
- Room dividers (Max=4);
- Touchless dispenser for soap or hand sanitizer (Max=4);
- HEPA Air purifier for rooms up to 500 sq. ft (Max=2);
- Individual learning kits designed for children ages 3-5 in an early learning setting (Max=30).
