The Salt Spring Island Foundation is seeking applications for its Foundation of Youth (FOY) Grant to advise and support the Board in the area of grant-making to charitable organizations for projects that benefit youth in the community.
Objectives
Foundation of Youth Objectives:
- To empower young people to take action on issues of concern
- To enhance the quality of life for youth on Salt Spring Island
- To support programs which encourage youth dignity, inclusiveness, fairness and equality
- To promote a youth voice in the community
- To increase opportunities for youth participation in the community
Funding Information
- There is a total of $5,000 to disburse this cycle, and that often is spread among more than one project.
Eligible Expenses
Regular Grants may be used for:
- Special projects or programs with specific outcomes and time frame
- Pilot programs
- Capital equipment or furnishings
- Capacity building for charitable organizations (i.e. board development, strategic planning, training)
- Wage assistance to cover staff time for direct work on the project.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Salt Spring Island Foundation can only grant to registered charities and other organizations qualified by the Canada Revenue Agency.
- Organizations must demonstrate a strong and committed Board, financial transparency and solvency, effective management and the capacity to carry out the proposed initiative in the proposed timeline.
- If your organization is not a registered charity, but has a working relationship with an organization that is registered, you may consider entering into an Intermediary agreement. In this case, please review the Use of an Intermediary Organization for Charitable Activities.
- As a basic guideline for grantmaking, the Foundation considers a balanced and broad view of community needs and potential opportunities. Preference is given to grants that are well researched and that promote collaboration.
Ineligible
Foundation of Youth Grants may NOT be used to fund:
- Ongoing operating expenses, staff salaries, rent
- Funds to cover budget deficits
- General fund drives
- Annual charitable appeals
- Directly awarded bursaries, scholarships and awards
- Benefits to individuals
- Expenses incurred before the date of the application’s approval by the board
- Activities of religious organizations that serve primarily their membership and/or direct religious purposes
- Political advocacy
