Grants for Implementing Science for Cancer Control in People Living with HIV in Low and Middle-Income Countries

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and National Institutes of Health is inviting applications for Implementation Science for Cancer Control in People Living with HIV (PLWH) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to accelerate the integration of evidence-based cancer control interventions for PLWH by leveraging existing HIV treatment and prevention infrastructure.

The goal of this proposal is to support implementation science to accelerate the integration of evidence-based cancer control interventions for PLWH into the healthcare delivery infrastructure that has been built worldwide for HIV treatment and prevention. These studies may include the identification and characterization of critical barriers and facilitators associated with successful integration of cancer control interventions within the LMIC healthcare system, as well as the development and testing of strategies ensuring delivery of these interventions to overcome these barriers with adequate fidelity (i.e., delivered as intended). This encourages studies to use existing models, theories, and conceptual frameworks of the implementation process, adapted to and evaluated within the context of local care settings and accommodating the needs of multiple stakeholders. Participatory approaches such as team science and community engaged research that engage stakeholders and end users throughout the research process are also encouraged. Research may also include testing strategies to scale up interventions which are sustainable and feasible across multiple resource constrained settings.

Objectives

Research topics supported by this proposal include, but are not limited to:

Studies to design, develop, and test theory-informed strategies to improve uptake and integration of evidence-based cancer control interventions.
Studies evaluating the comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different implementation strategies.
Studies of policies and other contextual factors that influence the success of dissemination and/or implementation efforts.
Studies that explore strategies to support the integration of telehealth/telemedicine interventions to deliver evidence-based cancer control.
Studies to understand how and why implementation efforts are successful (or unsuccessful) in HIV-positive populations in LMICs.
Studies of strategies to promote engagement and retention in evidence-based cancer control interventions among PLWH, including through improved cancer literacy and social support networks.

Funding Information

Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: National Cancer institute (NCI) intends to commit $ 5 million in FY 2022 to support up to 6 awards.
Award Budget: Application budgets are limited to $500,000 in direct costs per year.
Award Project Period: The maximum project period is 5 years.
