Deadline: 17 February 2017
The Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF) is currently seeking applications for its “Emergency Household Water Filter Challenge” to develop a better understanding about how existing household water filters perform in humanitarian emergencies, and to encourage the development of new filters specifically designed for the emergency context.
Providing clean water in humanitarian emergencies is essential, however few household water filters have been developed with this context in mind. In an emergency setting usability, durability, transportability, and cost arise as crucial aspects of filter design that sit alongside the vital pathogen filtering capacity of the technologies. Focusing on these features of filters, in addition to their filtering capabilities, is essential to improve water treatment in humanitarian emergencies.
Challenges & Funding
- Call for a Field Testing Partner: A call for a research partner capable of field testing household water filters in an emergency setting. There is up to £200,000 available for the successful applicant.
- Testing Household Water Filter in an Emergency: A call for manufacturers of existing household water filters to submit their devices for field testing.
- Develop the Next Generation of Emergency Household Water Filters: A call for researchers and manufacturers working on early stage water filters or looking to adapt existing filters for a humanitarian emergency context. There are three grants of up to £50,000 each.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Call is open to anyone, however special consideration will be given to filter designs and technologies that have the potential to be effective in humanitarian emergencies. Because of this, the design and usability of filters will be central to the selection process.
- Filters should be easy to use and maintain, durable, affordable, effective at removing harmful pathogens from water, and acceptable for use by the people affected by humanitarian crises.
