The Historic Hawai‘i Foundation (HHF) is seeking applications for its Hilo Preservation Grant Program to support preservation and beautification projects in historic Downtown Hilo on Hawai‘i Island.
The Hilo Preservation Program provides grants for the preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and beautification of historically-significant buildings and structures located in the core downtown area of Hilo. The program supports historic preservation as a mechanism for building community, enhancing Hawaii’s sense of place, and support for improved societal relationships.
The overall goal is to support projects that improve the appearance and longevity of Hilo’s historic waterfront and downtown area.
Funding Information
- Grants range from $10,000 to $100,000.
- Approximately 10 grants are expected to be awarded annually.
- Applications will be solicited two times per year.
- If an application is approved, 50% of the funds are provided upon project initiation and the remainder when the project is complete and the final report is accepted.
Eligibility Criteria
- Grants are available for the preservation of non‐residential historically‐significant buildings, structures (including walls, streetscape elements or public art) and landscapes (including exceptional trees and parks) regardless of ownership status. Non‐profit organizations, for‐profit businesses and government agencies may apply. Residential dwellings or single‐family houses are not eligible.
- The subject property must be listed on or found to meet the criteria for listing on the Hawai‘i or National Registers of Historic Place. Contributing buildings or features within a historic district may apply. Small‐scale features, such as walls, trees, landscaping, etc. are eligible to apply.
- Projects must be located within the area bounded by Hilo Bay on the east, Wailuku River on the north, Kino‘ole Street on the west and Ponahawai Street on the south. Historic properties in the vicinity that lie outside this area may be proposed with the advance approval of Historic Hawai‘i Foundation.
- The project must preserve or rehabilitate the historic property following appropriate preservation standards.
- The Grantee should demonstrate that additional funding and/or in‐kind support from individuals, community members and other funders is in place, with the grant funding request being part of an overall financial plan that is thorough and reasonable.
