UNESCO and Nestlé launched the initiative “Because Youth Matter” to provide young people with the resources and the skills they need to develop and carry forward innovative solutions to achieve positive social impact in their communities.
The project will begin in Latin America with a call for applications across the region. The end-goal is to scale-up the partnership to global level in the future.
Objectives
- In line with the purposes indicated in previous lines, the YOUTH IMPULSE initiative – Because Youth has the following particular objectives:
- Development and strengthening of capacities: Empowering youth, developing their capacities and providing them with the necessary space to transform their visions into tangible actions and positive changes with social impact on the ground.
- Bringing Youth to Leaders: Providing the opportunity to meaningfully engage with youth-focused development actors and the private sector to reshape societies affected by current crises and the pandemic.
- Involve young people as protagonists in the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals: Placing youth at the center, making them part of the solution to the problems that surround them.
- Provide resources to young people: So that they can develop and implement their projects with an environmental and social impact.
Themes
- Recognizing that the 17 SDGs are indivisible and interdependent, the thematic scope of the project (i.e. the theme of youth innovation and the youth-led solutions that will be supported by the project) will contribute to advancing those SDGs that align with the mandate. and UNESCO’s fields of competence and where UNESCO has a strategic contribution to make (namely SDGs 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 16).
- In this sense, the applications submitted on the platform may correspond to the following thematic areas:
- Climate action and sustainability
- Mental health and well-being
- Reduce inequalities and promote social inclusion and diversity.
General Provisions
- The IMPULSO JOVEN – Because Youth Matter pilot initiative will be governed by these bases and conditions, which contain the provisions that will regulate the people who can participate, the presentation of initiatives, opening and closing of the call for applications, publication, evaluation criteria, and other aspects that the challenge implies.
- The organizers reserve the right to interpret, modify, replace, comment and/or rectify these bases and conditions, obliging themselves to disseminate the modifications made, so that participants and users are fully aware of the modifications.
Prize Information
- 20 projects will be chosen as part of a capacity building program. In addition, each project will receive 10,000 USD as seed capital for its implementation.
- Project implementation: Projects that can be implemented in up to one year from the moment of the selection communication may apply to the initiative.
Eligibility Criteria
- Participants
- Individuals may participate who:
- They identify themselves as “youth” within the age range of 18 to 30 years.
- Identify as women, men or people with diverse gender identities
- Participate in initiatives of activism, entrepreneurship, be agents of change or transformation, individually and in organizations/entities/associations or as members.
- Come and live in Latin America.
- Organizations/associations/companies led by young people and that work on the topics established in Article 5 may also participate. For the purposes of the call, the application must be made by a young person (within the age range of 18 to 30 years). on behalf of the organization. That person will be the one who participates in the activities of the IMPULSO JOVEN – Because Youth Matter program on behalf of their organization.

Application Criteria
- Spanish language skills (as this will be the working language)
- Projects should be completed within 9 months and implemented at local or national level.
