The Cultural Heritage Center of the Office of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State and the United States Embassy in Morocco are pleased to announce the launch of the competition for the year 2021 Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.
- Funding will be in the form of a grant. The lowest amount per project will be $ 10,000; the highest limit will be $ 500,000 per project.
Categories
The AFCP program supports projects for the preservation of archaeological sites, historic buildings and monuments, museum collections, and forms of traditional cultural expression, such as indigenous languages and trades. Appropriate projects could include:
- Anastylosis (reassembly of a site from its original parts);
- Conservation (treatment of damage or deterioration of an object or site);
- Consolidation (attachment or linking of elements of an object or site);
- Documentation (recording in analogue or digital format of the state and main characteristics of an object, site or tradition);
- Inventory (list of objects, sites or traditions by location, characteristic, age or other characteristic or unifying state);
- Preventive conservation (treatment of conditions which threaten or damage a site, object, collection or tradition);
- Restoration (replacement of missing elements to recreate the original appearance of an object or site, generally appropriate only for fine arts, decorative arts and historic buildings);
- Stabilization (reduction of physical disturbance of an object or site).
Funding Restrictions
The AFCP program will not support the following activities or costs, and any proposals including the activities or costs listed below will not be eligible:
- The preservation or purchase of cultural objects, collections or property belonging to individuals or for commercial purposes, including those for which a transfer from the private or commercial sector to the public is envisaged or is in process, but whose transfer is not not completed at time of proposal submission.
- Preservation of the natural heritage (physical, biological and geological formations, paleontological collections, the habitats of animal and plant species, endangered fossils, etc.).
- The preservation of hominids or human remains.
- Preservation of media (newspapers, news, radio and television programs, etc.)
- Preservation of published documents that are available elsewhere (books, periodicals, etc.)
- The development of educational programs or materials for school use.
- Archaeological excavations or exploratory surveys for research purposes.
- Historical research, except where the research is justifiable and is integral to the success of the proposed project.
- The acquisition or creation of new collections for existing or new museums.
- The construction of new buildings, extensions or permanent roofs (on archaeological sites, for example).
- Commissions for new works of art or architecture for commemorative or economic development purposes.
- The creation of new dances or modern adaptation of existing traditional dances, music, songs, musical compositions, plays or other performing arts.
- The creation of replicas or reproduction of cultural objects or sites that no longer exist.
- The relocation of cultural sites from one physical location to another.
- The displacement of cultural objects or elements of cultural sites from the country for any reason.
- Digitization of cultural objects or collections, unless they are part of a larger and clearly defined conservation project.
- Conservation plans or other studies, unless they are a component of a larger project to implement the results of such studies.
- Financial reserves, endowment or working capital. (These funds must be spent within the period of the grant – up to five years – and cannot be used to create an endowment or working capital.)
- The costs of fundraising campaigns.
- Costs to cover unforeseen or miscellaneous expenses.
- Costs that would cover work performed before the results were announced, unless they had been previously approved.
- International travel, except where the travel is justifiable and is integral to the success of the proposed project.
- Travel or study abroad for professional development.
- Individual projects costing less than $ 10,000.
- Independent American projects abroad.
Eligibility Criteria
- The competition is open to all non-governmental organizations in Morocco, museums, the Ministry of Culture, or similar, non-commercial institutions, organizations that can demonstrate that they have the required experience and the means to manage projects of preservation of cultural heritage.
