The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2020 Grant Program.
The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation supports IRS-registered, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organizations with a public charity status of 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) only. These organizations must serve residents in the District of Columbia, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia.
Program Areas
Grants are made in five program areas: Arts and Humanities, Community Services, Education, Health, and the Environment.
- Arts and Humanities
- The Foundation’s Arts and Humanities grant-making includes theater, dance, music, visual arts, film and other multidisciplinary art forms, as well as organizations that promote the humanities.
- Community Services
- The Foundation’s Community Development grant-making includes affordable housing production and preservation, homeless services, supportive housing, foreclosure and eviction prevention and civic engagement
- Education
- The Foundation’s Education docket invests in learning from cradle to career, including early childhood education, kindergarten through twelfth-grade instruction and higher education.
- Environment
- The Foundation strives to preserve the region’s resources and raise awareness so that individuals can enjoy healthy and fulfilling lives in a clean environment.
- Health
- The Foundation’s Health and Wellness grant-making supports integrated healthcare and prevention efforts and broad collaborations, to ensure that all DC metropolitan residents live longer, healthier lives.
Funding Restrictions
In addition, The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation does not generally fund the following projects:
- Capital campaigns
- Endowments
- Multi-year grants
- Special events or tables for special events
Please also note, the Foundation does not fund:
- Organizations that do not have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS
- Private Foundations
- Public charities with a non-private foundation status of 509(a)(3)
- Individuals
- Organizations whose missions fall outside Funding Priorities
- Organizations serving residents outside the Washington, DC metropolitan area (see Eligibility Quiz)
Eligibility Criteria
The following quiz has been developed to help organizations determine their eligibility for a grant from The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.
- Is your organization an IRS-registered, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization with a non-private foundation status of 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2)?
- Does your organization serve residents of the District of Columbia, Prince George’s or Montgomery Counties in Maryland, or Arlington or Fairfax Counties or the cities of Falls Church or Alexandria in Virginia?
- Is your request for general operating or program support rather than special events (e.g., dinner tables, galas), endowments or an individual?
- Does your project or program fall under one or more of their program area Funding Priorities including: Arts and Humanities, Community Services, Education and Health & Environment?
- Is this your first grant application, or if you applied for support in the past, has 12 months passed since your most recent application date?
- If you have received a grant from the Foundation in the past, will the grant period for that award expire before the grant period begins for your current request? (If you have never received funding from the Cafritz Foundation, click “yes”.)
